Cosmetic Procedures for Men

Over the last few years, it has become increasingly common for men to use cosmetic procedures to improve the condition and appearance of their skin. They no longer need to just accept what they have and there now more pressure than ever for men to look good!

Male skin tends to be thicker and firmer due to greater amounts of collagen and elasticity. Better results are achieved from treatments which have been specifically tailored for use on male skin.

The following are popular procedures for men to tackle common skin issues:

Facial Treatments

Many cosmetic procedures designed to improve the appearance of facial skin tend to be suitable for both men and women. Treatments such as Microdermabrasion, which deeply exfoliate the skin, may have to be at a different intensity to compensate for the thicker male skin. They will still have a visibly beneficial effect by reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles will be reduced and the skin looking younger and fresher.

Smoother male skin can also be achieved by injections to temporarily relax the facial muscles that contract to cause lines or wrinkles.

Hair Removal

Laser Hair Removal is the most effective way to remove excess unwanted hair and popular areas of treatment for men are chest, back, upper cheeks and eyebrows.

It works using a laser beam which targets the hair follicle. The laser is attracted to the pigment in the hair known as melanin and then travels down to the core of the follicle to destroy it. This stops new growth being produced by the follicle but it will only work if the hair is at a certain point in its growth cycle.

Hair does not all grow at the same rate or at the same time and this is why a course of laser treatments is normally needed to achieve a significant permanent reduction.

Excessive Sweating

This is an embarrassing problem and thankfully treatments have now been devised so that no-one has to suffer with it any longer. There are two effective cosmetic procedures that are available to deal with it.

Iontophoresis involves an electrical current being passed through the skin. This reduced the activity of the sweat glands and may cause them to completely stop the production of sweat. This procedure is only suitable for use on the hands and feet but can be used on the armpits with the correct equipment.

The injection of muscle relaxants, such as Botulinum toxin, into the armpit will greatly reduce sweating. Studies have shown that in most cases it will reduce it by up to 75%. The effects will not be permanent but they should last for about 6-12 months.
