Melasma

Melasma

Melasma is a hyperpigmentation disorder where the skin darkens due to increased function of melanocytes. Melanocytes are responsible for producing pigment and can become stimulated to produce unwanted melanin, which results in patchy discolouration of the skin.

Melasma commonly affects the apples of the cheeks, the mid forehead, jawline and areas around the mouth.  It can also occur on arms and shoulders.  It is caused by fluctuating levels of hormones, most commonly during pregnancy. Other triggers include oestrogen supplements, birth control pills, cellular hypersensitivity to normal oestrogen levels and sun exposure.

Statististics show that women are much more likely to be affected with only 10% of cases being men. This condition is very common for women in the Asian community.
