Red Itchy Skin

If you have developed red, itchy skin, you may be suffering from eczema. Eczema is a chronic condition that causes dry, cracked skin that is red and itchy. The most commonly suffered type is atopic eczema. The symptoms may show behind your knees, on the elbow fronts, or any other body areas where there are folds of skin.

Eczema Causes

The condition is not attributable to one cause only. A combination of genetics and environmental triggers may cause the onset.

Eczema Triggers

If you are genetically predisposed to the condition, certain environmental factors will cause a flare-up. Some of the most common environmental triggers are pollen, pet fur and dust mites. There are instances, particularly in very young children, where food allergies may trigger the condition. These foods include nuts, eggs, whole milk and wheat. Hormonal changes in females have also been known to act as triggers. Stress may cause flare-ups.

Eczema Treatments

The condition cannot be treated with one cure only, however, a variety of treatments could ease the symptoms. The use of emollients and topical corticosteroids have proven to be effective. Emollients should be used regularly to treat dry skin. Corticosteroids will aid in the reduction of swelling and redness.
