The seven deadly signs of ageing

We think there are too many things that can make you appear older than you really are, so we put together a list of the seven most wicked signs of ageing; and how to fight back against them!

1. Un-even skin tone

Causes:
With age pigment builds up in the layers of the skin, leaving the skin with a patchy and un-even appearance. This usually results from insufficient sun screen during early life but can have other causes such as fluctuating hormone levels.
Un-even skin tone is one of the biggest factors which will make someone look a lot older than they really are, regardless of wrinkles. This has in fact been proven in two scientific studies.

2. Crow’s Feet

Causes:
Thinning of the skin due to ageing, poor skincare and lifestyle factors i.e. smoking, sun damage and diet take their toll on the skin. This can result in lines forming around and to the corners of the eyes.

The signs of crow’s feet begin to show up in peoples young as 24, therefore it is important to take the necessary precautions early on in life.

3. Wrinkles

Causes:

Ageing

Your face contains hundreds of muscles which give the ability to pull so many faces, however the downside to this is they crease your skin and, over time, wrinkles form

Wrinkles form due to the loss or decrease of collagen and elastin in the dermal layers of the skin.
Loss of water can lead to dehydration of skin cells which can also lead to wrinkle formation.

4. Furrowed brow (Glabella)

Causes:
Again the muscles in your face are conspiring against you to create these deep furrows. Collagen depletion and over time sun damage will also increase the appearance of these deep lines.

Recommended Treatments:

  • Skin peels which will clear away dead cells rejuvenating the skin
  • Botox® which will relax the muscles around the glabella significantly reducing any signs of ageing and
  • Dermaroller which can massively stimulate collagen production, rejuvenating the skin and restoring its original texture.

5. Skin tags

Causes:
As you grow older these benign skin lesions form all over your body, but are particularly noticeable on the neck and face. While completely harmless they can cause some people great distress and discomfort as well as contributing to factors which make a person appear older.

Diet and a person’s weight are significant factors in skin tag formation. Generally, skin tags form near or on points of frequent friction i.e. eyelids, folds of the skin, underarms and neck.

Recommended Treatments:

  • Cryotherapy to freeze the skin tag off
  • Hyfrecation which uses electric current to destroy the skin tag
  • Shave excision, a minor surgical procedure performed under local anaesthetic

6. Melasma (on cheeks)

Causes:
The common cause of Melasma is fluctuating levels of hormones, specifically oestrogen, during pregnancy, menopause or can be caused by oestrogen supplements, contraceptive pills, HRT and cellular hypersensitivity to normal oestrogen levels. The hyperpigmentation usually occurs on the upper cheeks and is very common with Asian women. It can also be worsened by sun and UV exposure.
