Harefield Pigmentation Treatments

Hyperpigmentation, or a darkening of certain areas of the skin is a concern for numerous individuals. There are various causes, one of the most common experienced by women being a condition called melasma

What is Melasma?

Melasma is a condition caused by skin cells called melanocytes becoming hyperactive. It commonly occurs on facial areas but has also been known to affect the arms and shoulders. It is widely associated with hormonal imbalances such as those that may occur during pregnancy or while taking birth control pills.

There are two approaches to treating this problem. Topical creams such as Avene’s D-pigment can aid in evening out the skin’s appearance while also helping prevent new dark spots from arising. This will help the cosmetic appearance, however there also exist treatments which can get to the root cause of the problem. Skin peels produce healthier-looking and more pliable skin. Another process involves locally injecting a substance known as Tranexamic acid. This addresses where the problem begins and has been shown to alleviate the appearance of dark patches while also inhibiting others from appearing.
